Heidi Klum was conceived in the German city of Bergisch Gladbach in June of 1973. Erna Klum, Heidi's mom was a professional hairdresser. Gunther Klum was an director of a cosmetics company. Heidi's father worked as a Production Manager for the fragrance firm 4711. The city of her birth is Bergisch Gladbach (a city of around 100,000 inhabitants six miles from Cologne), Heidi was raised in the city. Heidi Klum is a former model of German descent who is a television host as well as a fashion producer. Karin her girlfriend, who was the 18-year old student who was at the time, encouraged her to join a German talent show dubbed Model 92. The German women's publication Petra supported the show, which was part of Thomas Gottschalk's late night talkshow. Klum had to compete against 25,000 other contestants all across Germany and Europe and Europe, before she made it to the semi-finals. In April 1992 she won the biggest prize in modeling, $300,000.
